Vidya Jyoti

About Us

Vidya Jyoti is a charity founded in 2019 by Dr Pamela Kaushal – a Consultant Psychiatrist from UK, who witnessed severe deprivation in parts of India during her one year sabbatical.

Originally, the charity was established to alleviate hunger and to promote health and wellbeing amongst the poorest children of Rajasthan and Bihar. These children were offered nutritious meals twice a day for almost two years and were provided with daily basic literacy, numeracy and human values lessons. Additionally, the poorest identified families were provided with monthly rations and basic hygiene kits. We also started a rural vocational training centre teaching women sewing as well as computer lessons for children of the village.
However, as our work progressed, we realised that it was difficult to maintain the work in India as there was lack of commitment from the children and their families who often travelled to other parts of India for work purposes, several months on end. We also came to know that the government was providing food for these children and free education however, they were choosing not to attend. (Please visit the Vidya Jyoti India tab to find out more about what we did in India).
This led Pamela to explore other areas in which help was needed, ending up in Ghana, Africa, where a far greater need was discovered – the need for clean drinking water, a basic human necessity! Since then, Vidya Jyoti has established itself as a charity in Ghana and has been working to provide clean drinking water to thousands of people. (Please visit the Vidya Jyoti Africa – Ghana page to see what we have been up to).
In 2023, we expanded our water project and bought clean drinking water to Sierra Leone as well as building and establishing two schools in 2022. (Please visit the Vidya Jyoti Africa – Sierra Leone page to see what we have been up to). Help starts at home and therefore, we have also carried out service projects in the UK by supporting other charities and by offering our time and skills to provide entertainment to people with disabilities. For the last three years, every Easter and Christmas, we have donated hampers and gifts to Young Carers Bucks and Wycombe Women’s Aid (two Buckinghamshire based charities). We have also regularly supported food banks such as the One Can Trust. Our biggest, and most rewarding project in the UK, is providing entertainment four times a year for adults with disabilities. (Please visit our Vidya Jyoti UK page to view our pictures and to explore what we have done).

Since its founding, the team of Vidya Jyoti has grown, and we are a friendly group of volunteers who love devoting our time and effort to improve the quality of life for as many as we can, following the words of our master Sri Satya Sai Baba – “service to man is service to God”.
